Children may be exposed to dangerously high levels of radiation during lower back pain diagnosis.

Spinal stenosis does not just arise with age, children can also experience back pain from spinal canal narrowing, and the symptoms of pinched nerves, ischaemia, and other spinal dysfunction. A recent presentation at the American Academy of Pediatrics has warned against the routine use of imaging for younger patients presenting with lower back pain however, noting that smaller children exposed to radiation from imaging are at higher risk of complications from such radiation than adults.
